Over the weekend actress celebrity Stacey Dash took a lot of heat when she announced that she is a Romney supporter. Dash is black.
But I ask this question because I’ve seen more than several articles (and hundreds of comments) here on Newsvine claiming that blacks are supporting president Obama simply because he is black.
There might be some truth to that, but not much. Let’s look at the historical facts.
Jimmy Carter received 93% of the black vote, 94% of blacks voted for Bill Clinton.
90% of blacks voted for Al Gore. 88% of blacks voted for John Kerry.
The latest polls show black support for President Obama at 94%.
In 2008 96% of blacks voted for Barack Obama. That’s just 2% points more than Clinton got 3points more than Carter got.
Blacks are overwhelmingly Democrats and no matter whom the nominee is or what color, race or creed they bring with them, history proves that blacks are going to vote Democrat. Plain and simple.
Now I am sure there are some blacks that are voting purely on race, I won’t deny that’s there…but it’s really an insignificant figure given the historical evidence to the contrary. And just for the record, what would be wrong with blacks voting for President Obama because he is black? Why shouldn’t blacks take pride in supporting the first black to sit in The Oval Office?
Whites have been voting for white candidates because they were white since the very founding of America - and we know this is true because for ages blacks were denied the right to vote.
Blacks have been supporting white candidates all along. The suggestion that blacks are racist for voting for Obama is more an indictment of white guilt than anything else.
Why are the voting motives of black Americans being questioned?
If blacks were voting on race, wouldn’t Herman Cain have done much better?
If the majority of blacks were Republicans and then switched over to the Democratic Party to support a black candidate – well then I could see the race angle pretty clearly. But that’s not the case here. No, this is just more projection of racism onto black people and quite frankly it is disgusting.
But to be sure, we know there are legions of Americans supporting Romney because he is white and we know this to be true by the sheer number of Republicans who say that President Obama is a Muslim, that he wasn’t born in the United States or he’s a Marxist and a Communist.
We know this is true because almost every GOP presidential contender has been afraid to stand up to the birthers or the “Obama is a Muslim” crowds – and that includes Willard Romney.
We know this is true because Speaker of the House, John Boehner, was asked on “Meet The Press” why he and other GOP leaders don’t speak out against the people in their party who insist that President Obama is a Muslim and wasn'rt born in America. What was Boehner’s response? "It's not my job to tell the American people what to think". Really? That is exactly what your job is and that is exactly what you do on every other issue!
Instead they have all pretended that they didn’t hear what they heard. John McCain, to my knowledge is the only GOP presidential candidate that had the decency to stand up and tell the birthers the truth.
Just recently Willard Romney joked to a crowd: "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."
Just this past Friday MSNBC’s Chris Matthews interviewed one of those Republicans. Five times he asked her to explain why she says President Obama is a Communist and 5 times she said “because I know he is”. No facts, no evidence, just hot air.
All Americans are privileged to vote without reprisal or intimidation and all Americans should cherish and respect that privilege. Who you vote for is your business and yours alone.
